When you think about a lock, the first type that might come to mind is a lock that is accompanied by a key. However, there are many other types of locks that are opened without a key and come with their own advantages and disadvantages.

Combination Locks

A combination lock is one of the more old fashioned types of keyless locks. A combination lock has tens of thousands of possible combinations. Therefore, there is no way that a thief will simply stumble upon the correct combination. You can easily reset the combination lock with the press of a button. This type of lock is also very convenient because it can be fit anywhere and doesn't require a power source.

One of the problems with combination locks is that they can often be bypassed by simply cutting the bolts. There are some locks that are designed to be durable, but no lock is indestructible. However, it will require more work for an intruder to access your property.

There are some combination locks that come with a key that allows you to reset the lock. This is great if you forget the combination. However, if someone else finds the key, there's a risk that they may open the lock.

Keypads

Another type of keyless lock is an electronic lock. For example, you could install a keypad. This functions similar to a combination lock in that you must remember the keypad code. If there is a power outage, you may not be able to use the code. However, some keypads can be battery-operated. Also, a keypad can be used in combination with a lock and serve as a backup when you forget the key code.

Key codes are also easier to use. You do not have to fumble through your pocket or purse for the keys. This is useful when you're carrying a bag of groceries. However, this is also a matter of preference since some find it more difficult to punch a code in while holding groceries.

If you would like to give more access to a larger number of individuals, it's easier to give out a key code. This can be changed later on. For example, if you have a cleaning service arriving at your home, they could be given a temporary code. Once you're aware of the upsides and downsides of each type, it's easier to choose the right one.
