When a lock works smoothly and effectively, you can use it multiple times every day without giving it much thought. However, locks may break down due to frequent use. Unfortunately, a faulty lock can hinder you from entering your home. As a homeowner, it is therefore important to learn why this happens. Below are a few causes of a broken lock.

Weather Stripping

Weather-stripping is the process of sealing all openings in your home, such as windows and doors, from the effects of the weather. It also helps curb excessive energy bills. Unfortunately, weather stripping can cause lock issues such as misalignment or the erosion of the outer paint. As a result, the latch could get damaged internally, and in a worst-case scenario, your lock may break. Therefore, you need to contact a locksmith to install a new lock. It would also be a good idea to replace the weather stripping.

A Frozen or Stuck Lock

A frozen lock can be a stressful situation because it prevents you from unlocking your door. The issue is usually caused by a mechanical issue resulting from the accumulation of dirt or grime. In an emergency, you could try to lubricate the lock's inner parts with a silicone spray to see whether it helps. However, it is not a good idea to force it, as this could cause further damage. For a long-term solution, it would be best to hire a professional locksmith to address the root of the issue, even if the lock opens after applying the spray as an emergency trouble-shooting measure.

Misalignment

A lock can also break if it's improperly aligned with the strike plate. In such cases, the bolt has likely shifted position, usually due to fluctuating temperatures that cause the lock to expand and contract. Keeping that in mind, it is best to contact a locksmith promptly to unscrew the lock and position the strike plate correctly.

A Faulty Lock Bolt

If you insert your key in the lock, turn it, and the bolt remains completely static, your lock's bolt may be faulty. As a result, you cannot open your door until you have the lock professionally replaced.

While these problems can occur suddenly and cause great inconvenience, there is no need to damage your door attempting to gain access to your home. Fortunately, a skilled and qualified locksmith can address the issue and enable you to access your home.
